List of Children's Books and Philippine Folklore

An important part of every cultural heritage is growing up with one's native mythology and folklore. I believe most of us Filipino adults have had this lacking in our Philippine education as truly, we were educated in a colonial system. Ironically, we are all familiar with European fairy tales and Greek Mythology. And maybe even more so than with Philippine gods and goddesses and many other folktales.

I came to this realization when I was reading the novel When the Rainbow Goddess Wept by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard (see Fiction List). In that novel, I read for the first time some beautiful Philippine mythology that I had never heard of before in my elementary or high school days.

Today, in an effort to dig further into the Philippine treasure of mythology and tales, I have come up with a, short list that includes some modern Pinoy stories for children, and would like to share it with you here.

If you yourself know of other books, even if they cannot be ordered over the Internet, please share with us those titles. E-mail us you info and we will add it here.

Kneeling Carabao & Dancing Giants : Celebrating Filipino Festivals
by Rena Krasno, Ileana C. Lee (Illustrator) / Hardcover / Published 1997

Midwest Book Review
This is an exceptional introduction to Filipino festivals: exceptional because there's relatively little written on Filipino history and culture for either kids or adults, in this country. This requires excellent reading skills and kids at the advanced elementary through middle school grades will be the obvious audience for the book; but many an adult seeking detailed information on Filipino festivals will find this unique, blending the story of Philippine independence with notes on various cultural contributions to festivals. Highly recommended for its depth of information and many color embellishments.

The author, Krasno, Rena (415) 967-8948 , July 20, 1997
I wrote this book to serve as a bridge between ethnic groups
As National Chairperson of a children's library project in the Philippines, I saw an urgent need for a book that would teach Filipino children to take pride in their heritage. Here in the U.S., I believe this book can serve as a bridge to other ethnic groups and generate friendship between all children.
