The New Woman at Cavite
by Ellen Hayes in an 1899 issue of The Woman's Journal
Warrior spirit of Filipino women. A short article by an American woman about Filipinas in Cavite who petitioned Aguinaldo to bear arms and take part in the war against Americans occupying the Philippines after the Spanish-American war. The writer points out that even as the women in the U.S. are calling for the right to vote Philippine women call for the right to defend their nation.
In the Paris Treaty, Spain, a fading imperial power ceded the Philippine Islands along with Puerto Rico and other territories to the new risinig wanna-be-will-be-an-Empire, the United States. During that time, the U.S. campaign to colonize other lands had its opposition in the United States by anti-imperialist groups that included the insights and voice of Mark Twain. Boondocks.net brings you more articles on this movement so check out the site for more great information on this historical time of Philippine-American relations. (02/02/03)

Familiar Figures (Julie Lluch, Filipina Sculptor and artist daughters...)
by Ria Mendoza @ www.herword.com
When Julie married known painter Danny Dalena, she had no idea that she was going to be an artist herself. The need to express herself creatively surfaced with time. She would steal into her ex-husbands studio to get some materials and paint. "It was one of my very early paintings," she waves her hand towards the painting, "I wanted to be a painter until Danny said 'No, one painter in the family is enough.'" That proved to be one of destiny's finer strokes. "I wouldn't have discovered sculpture if I was not prohibited from painting," she amusedly recalls. After seeing a potter demonstrate his craft on TV, Julie was inspired to do the same. The next day, she and then husband Danny went out to buy a sack of clay and everything rolled from there.
After giving birth to her second daughter, Aba, Julie formally became a sculptor. She juggled her responsibilities as a wife and mother of two in between housework... (06/10/03)
